ClearSky Philosophy

Carbon Offsets

We believe carbon offsets are a powerful way for individuals and businesses to act immediately to counter global climate change.  Critics have rightly pointed out that carbon offsets are not a magic bullet that will solve global warming.  Offsets offer a way to begin mitigating climate impacts immediately, however, and this strategy can be effective when coupled with sincere effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. 

As project developers and providers of carbon credits, ClearSky pursues only high-quality projects that deliver multiple benefits (including biodiversity conservation, income generation for disadvantaged people, or protection of soils and water).  Our projects will be certified under demanding standards to ensure credibility, and our business practices will be open and transparent.  Our consulting services are a rigorous effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with genuine carbon offsets used to mitigate the remaining climate footprint.

An example of the ClearSky philosophy in action can be seen in our tropical forestry projects.  Tropical forests present a clear means to sequester atmospheric CO₂ while providing valuable benefits to local communities and native ecosystems.  Sustainably managed or protected forests can offer meaningful employment and communal resource access, while also halting illegal logging, stabilizing soil, providing vital habitat for native plant and animal species, and protecting downstream ecosystems.  Again, some critics have honest arguments against forestry sequestration projects.  These critiques spell out important cautions and guidelines for implementing forestry projects, but they don’t cancel out the multiple benefits offered by suitable and well-planned projects.

Walking the Walk

As a growing business in the world of carbon footprinting and offsetting, we feel that it's important to take a look in the mirror and examine our own contributions to climate change. We also try to be open and transparent in our business practices, and to make ClearSky an educational resource for our community and clients. In that spirit, ClearSky has joined the United Nations Climate Neutral Network, and pledged to fully offset our corporate GHG emissions. You can view our 2009 GHG Assessment, as well as our Confirmation Certificate for the offsets we retired. In 2009, ClearSky was named the Sustainable Business of the Year by the Montana Sustainable Business Council. In 2010, ClearSky participated in the Strive Torwards Sustainability assessment designed by SBC. We were awarded with the "Achiever" status, which means that we're doing very well, but there's still more room for us to improve. So improve we will!
