Futuro Forestal

Panama Native Species Re-forestation Project

Initiated in 1995 on only 10 hectares of land, we have now reforested over 1,000 hectares of lowland Pacific rainforest in Panama.  This project, run jointly with Futuro Forestal, aims to expand to over 10,000 hectares by 2012.  Our strategy in Panama has been to purchase degraded or abandoned cattle pastures (cleared of forests from the 1950’s to the 1970’s, typically) and employ local people in our forest restoration efforts.  We plant over 50 native rainforest species and one commercial timber species (teak), which makes for an exceptionally diverse forest cover.  We sustainably harvest a proportion of the timber over the 20-30 year management period, and the project’s emissions reductions are generated by the remaining forest.  This project has been an excellent model of environmentally and socially responsible climate action, achieving Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification for sustainable forestry and Climate, Community, and Biodiversity Alliance (CCBA) certification at the Gold level for environmental and social criteria.  This project was designed according to methodology AR0004 approved by the UN Executive Board for use under the Clean Development Mechanism.
